Koh Samui - Good to know

Culture

The Culture of Thailand is heavily influenced by Buddhism. Thailand is nearly 95% Theravada Buddhist, with minorities of Muslims (4.6%), Christians (0.7%), Mahayana Buddhists, and other religions.

Thai Theravada Buddhism supported and overseen by the government, with monks receiving a number of government benefits, such as free use of the public transportation infrastructure.

Buddhism in Thailand is strongly influenced by traditional beliefs regarding ancestral and natural spirits, which have been incorporated into Buddhist cosmology.

The basis of the Thai culture is in the family. The young are taught to respect parents, elders, teachers and buddhist monks.

Please notice the following rules:
  • Do not touch any Thai person (especially children) on the head.
  • Do not point your feet at anyone or anything.
  • Do not step over anyone, instead walk around them.
  • Do not walk through a closed circle of people, instead walk around them.
  • Entering a house or shop, take your shoes off please.
  • Sure you will not see Thai couples embracing or kissing.
    Explicit affection is considered disrespectful.
